Toni Chavarria

Kindergarten, Lead Teacher, Math Coach and Consultant

Coach Toni is a professionally certified mathematics educator and traveling instructional consultant from New York City. Her firm, Play.Math.Grow specializes in supporting schools with conceptual math defenses, classroom systems, school culture, and fostering strong student relationships. With a proven track record in creating and implementing innovative educational programs, she is dedicated to empowering educators and advancing global education initiatives. Her work inside of Play.Math.Grow is built on the premise that learning should always be interdisciplinary because life doesn't isolate experiences by subject. From infancy, children do math and perform mathematical operations but unless they are exposed to the academic language of math just as much as they are exposed to their primary language, language will be enhanced and math will be taught. Her goal in any school setting is to tap into the knowledge that a student already possesses to build confidence, enhance conceptualization, promote deeper understanding, and provide the translation between everyday language, everyday experiences, and academic language to produce a well rounded, and capable student.

Coach Toni holds a bachelor's degree in Pure Mathematics and a master’s degree in Adolescent Mathematics Education from Hunter College. She has taught a range of subjects, including fourth through twelfth-grade physical education and sixth through twelfth-grade mathematics in New York and New Jersey. In addition to her teaching experience, she tutors students in mathematics and standardized test prep from pre-elementary to university levels.

As an entrepreneur, Coach Toni created a music album designed to help students memorize and conceptually process multiplication facts. During the pandemic, she launched "Virtual Senior Trip," a program that offered live, virtual, standards-based math field trips for middle and high school students, allowing them to interact with entrepreneurs and professionals from their homes or classrooms as she traveled around the country.

In her free time, she enjoys playing the piano, roller skating, dancing, and spending time with her husband and children.
