Where Tradition Meets Exploration:

The Heart of Jewish Life & Learning

At the Innovative School of Temple Beth Sholom, Jewish life and learning go together. Rooted in tradition and guided by Reform Judaism’s emphasis on informed choice, our program fosters a strong foundation in Jewish knowledge. This empowers learners to explore their identities, including their Jewish heritage. From cherished customs to core values and everyday actions, Jewish life and learning are woven into the very fabric of our school community.

Curriculum

Unveiling a World of Language:

The Power of Hebrew and Jewish Terminology

Studies show that learning another language strengthens critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and helps children appreciate the world’s diversity.

At the Innovative School, our engaging Ulpan-Or Hebrew curriculum goes beyond basic language skills. Through interactive experiences, songs, and stories, we unlock the beauty and depth of Hebrew. Learners will gain a deeper understanding of Jewish terminology and concepts.

Hebrew opens doors to a deeper connection with Jewish communities, both in Israel and around the globe. It unlocks a treasure chest of Jewish stories and traditions, keeping them vibrant for future generations.

Unveiling Jewish Wisdom:

A Journey Through History, Text, and Tradition

Our Jewish Studies program invites learners on an intellectual and spiritual adventure. We delve into a rich tradition of critical reading, debate, and analysis of Jewish texts and concepts. By grappling with profound questions, learners gain powerful tools to interpret and understand all forms of literature.

The curriculum encompasses the vast tapestry of Jewish history, the core text of Tanakh and its diverse interpretations, and the significance of Jewish holidays. Weekly Shabbat observance and holiday celebrations offer a window into vibrant traditions that connect learners to their heritage, mark the passage of time, and add meaning to their lives. Tefillah, Jewish prayer practice, fosters personal reflection, communal connection, and an appreciation for the beauty and purpose of Jewish rituals.

This unique blend of ancient and contemporary practices equips learners with a powerful framework to navigate the present and shape their future as fulfilled individuals.

Cultivating a Connection:

Exploring Israel and Its People throughout the Journey

From its ancient roots to the modern nation, Israel holds a special place in Jewish life. Throughout their time at the Innovative School, learners explore this deep connection. They learn how the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael) has been woven into Jewish traditions, prayers (tefillah), holidays (chagim), rituals, and good deeds (mitzvot).

We go beyond memorization. Learners develop their own understanding of Israel’s significance in Judaism and Jewish identity. They delve into the vibrant mix of Israeli society, encountering its diverse Jewish and non-Jewish communities.

Our Hebrew and Jewish Studies classes are a springboard for learning about Israel. Informal programs and experiences add another layer.

A Journey Through Time:

Celebrating Jewish Rituals and Holidays

The rhythm of the Jewish year brings our school community together. Learners delve into the full spectrum of Jewish holidays throughout the year, experiencing them on both a personal and communal level.

In Jewish Studies and Hebrew classes, learners embark on a journey of discovery, studying the origins, customs, and traditions behind each holiday. They explore the laws and interpretations that shape these celebrations, investigating the diverse practices observed by Jews around the world. From greetings, rituals, special foods, and customs, learners unpack the intricate web of Jewish tradition.

Beyond the classroom, our school transforms into a vibrant hub of celebration. We come together as a community to joyously observe Jewish holidays, fostering a sense of connection and belonging.

Learning by Doing:

Putting Jewish Values into Action

Our service-learning program is inspired by a core Jewish principle: Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. We believe that intellectual exploration should lead to positive action, fostering a lifelong sense of responsibility towards our communities and the world.

Drawing on the Jewish concept of Tzedek, justice and righteousness, our service-learning projects empower learners to make a real difference. Throughout their journey at the Innovative School, learners will actively engage in a variety of meaningful service opportunities, putting their Jewish values into practice.

Finding Meaning Through Prayer:

The Tefillah Experience

At the Innovative School, Tefillah (prayer) is more than just words. It’s a daily sanctury where learners explore their inner selves and their relationship with God, connect with their community, and discover the beauty and purpose behind Jewish rituals.

Our Tefillah program provides a space for learners to express gratitude, hopes, and dreams for the future. Here, they bridge the gap between self, community, and the divine, fostering a sense of spirituality and connection.

This experience includes an exploration of the weekly Torah portion. Through engaging discussions, learners unpack the meaning of text, connect to God, and bridge the past and present.

We equip learners with the skills to actively participate in Tefillah, take on leadership roles, and confidently express their reflections. Learners come together for a weekly Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) experience. This tradition allows them to connect the weekly Torah portion and Jewish values to their own lives. As they reflect on the past week, look forward to Shabbat, and draw connections to current events, learners deepen their understanding of Judaism and their place within it.
