Hands-On Learning in Action! Our third and fifth grade learners brought their Social Studies curriculum to life during an incredible visit to the Miccosukee Indian Village.

As part of our study on Indigenous Peoples of North America, we explored how the geography, climate, and natural resources of South Florida and the Everglades shaped the daily life, homes, food, and traditions of the Miccosukee people. During our private tour with Solan Winterhawk Jim, learners discovered that the Miccosukee Nation is made up of eight clans, Panther, Bear, Bird, Deer, Wind, Big Town, Snake, and Otter. We learned that the Miccosukee have their own government system with police officers, judges, and leaders who maintain their laws and traditions. Learners also met community members who spoke parts of the Miccosukee language and demonstrated traditional arts such as wood carving, fabric design, and dressmaking. We learned that women are deeply respected and given the most honored spaces within their homes.

Learners were amazed by an alligator wrestling demonstration, got to hold a baby alligator, and even met a friendly tortoise named Marley!

We ended the day creating beaded keychains inspired by Miccosukee art, a perfect reflection of creativity and cultural respect. This unforgettable experience reminded us that Indigenous Peoples are not only part of history, they are vibrant, living communities whose traditions, languages, and stories continue today.
